Saba’s Plan for a Coral Comeback

Saba is launching a new project from 2024 to 2026 aimed at restoring its coral reefs. This initiative will focus on reviving key coral species, like staghorn and elkhorn corals, through a technique called coral gardening. The Saba Conservation Foundation is working with Van Hall Larenstein University to create and maintain coral nurseries, which will then be outplanted in essential reef areas. Alongside corals, the project also plans to restock sea urchins that help curb algae growth, benefiting the overall marine ecosystem. This effort is part of a larger goal to enhance coral and ecosystem health across the Dutch Caribbean.
