An Island of Hope – St Helena’s extensive MPA

St Helena, an isolated island in the South Atlantic, boasts a vast Marine Protected Area (MPA) covering 448,411 square kilometers, which is more than twice the size of Great Britain. This MPA aims to protect marine ecosystems, manage natural resources sustainably, and enhance understanding of the marine environment. The waters around St Helena are home to diverse species, including seasonal aggregations of whale sharks, making it a significant spot for divers. Regulations are in place to ensure sustainable interaction with wildlife, contributing to the island’s growing marine tourism industry.
