In 2019, British diver Karl Bareham died while diving at Julian Rocks in Australia. An inquest revealed that his death may have been caused by Immersion Pulmonary Oedema (IPO) linked to chronic alcohol abuse. Bareham was found unresponsive on the sea floor with his regulator out of his mouth. Medical experts indicated that his history of alcoholism, combined with his physical health issues, likely contributed to a sudden event that led to his drowning. The inquiry also raised concerns about the dive equipment he used, suggesting that it may not have been appropriate for safe diving.
