National poll shows Maldivians oppose shark fishery reopening

A recent poll in the Maldives shows that 77% of people oppose reopening gulper shark fishing. The poll suggests fears about damage to the environment and the economy. Gulper sharks are endangered and suffered a 97% population drop due to overfishing. The Maldives was declared a shark sanctuary in 2010, which attracts eco-tourism. Many want to keep this status for marine health and international reputation.
