Ask DAN: Top 3 diving illnesses and injuries reported to DAN

Scuba diving accidents can happen, but they are rare. The most common injuries include ear and sinus barotrauma, decompression sickness, and marine envenomation. Barotrauma causes ear pain and dizzy feelings. Decompression sickness, known as “the bends,” involves painful nitrogen bubbles in the body. Marine envenomation occurs from stings or bites from sea creatures. To prevent injuries, equalize your ears early, ascend slowly, and avoid marine life.
