Great Barrier Reef coral cover declines sharply from record high

Coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef has sharply declined. The decline was caused by heat stress, cyclones, and starfish outbreaks. Hard coral cover in the Northern and Central GBR is still above average. However, the Southern GBR has dropped below its long-term average. Mass bleaching events are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
