An international team of scientists recently discovered new coral gardens and hydrothermal vents in the South Sandwich Islands during an Ocean Census expedition. This remote area is known for its extreme conditions and rich biodiversity. The researchers found numerous species that were previously unknown, including corals, sponges, and deep-sea organisms. Notably, they confirmed the presence of hydrothermal vents at a depth of 700 meters, which support unique ecosystems fueled by chemosynthesis. This expedition highlights the need for ongoing ocean exploration and the cataloging of marine life.
