Ocean Liner To Become World’s Largest Artificial Reef Off Florida Coast
The former ocean liner SS United States will become the world’s largest artificial reef off the Florida coast. Okaloosa County purchased the 990-foot vessel and plans to spend about $9 million to prepare it for sinking. The reef site will be located less than 25 miles offshore. Similar projects, like the sunken USS Oriskany, have attracted over 10,000 divers annually and provided significant economic benefits to local communities.
