The Red Sea – a History of its Formation

The Red Sea is about 2,000 km long and formed 38 million years ago. It has a high number of unique marine species, attracting many scuba divers. Five million years ago, its northern end connected to the Mediterranean Sea. The sea’s salinity and temperature are different from the Indian Ocean. Its coral reefs are relatively young, only reaching their current level 5,000 years ago.
