Worrying levels of PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ released into UK MPAs

Recent research from the University of Portsmouth and the Marine Conservation Society revealed alarming levels of PFAS, or ‘forever chemicals,’ found in UK marine protected areas. These synthetic substances can accumulate in marine life and do not break down in the environment, posing long-term risks to both ocean ecosystems and human health. For example, these chemicals were detected in seaweed at levels over 6,000 times higher than the surrounding water, which can harm marine animals that feed on them. The findings highlight an urgent need for action to ban PFAS and prevent further pollution of our oceans.
