DCS is on the Rise Amongst Freedivers

Decompression sickness (DCS) is becoming more common among freedivers, although it is less frequent than in scuba diving. Freedivers are exploring deeper depths, which increases their risk for DCS, particularly a type called Taravana syndrome. Factors contributing to this risk include making multiple deep dives without appropriate surface intervals, dehydration, and pre-existing medical conditions. To prevent DCS, freedivers should stay vigilant for symptoms even after surfacing and know emergency procedures, including the location of a decompression chamber.
