After 16 years of effort, local communities in northern Puerto Rico have successfully established a new Marine Protected Area (MPA) that spans over 200 square kilometers. This area, known as the Underwater Gardens of Vega Baja and Manati, includes important ecosystems like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. It is home to over 14 endangered species, including the Caribbean manatee. The MPA aims to support local fisheries and the ecotourism industry, ensuring these waters remain a sustainable source of food and livelihood for future generations.
