The central gulf coast is lacking in healthcare for dive injuries. Decompression illness, known as the bends, requires quick medical care. Unfortunately, there are very few treatment facilities for such cases. The distance to these facilities can delay essential care. This situation can deter divers from visiting the region and hurt local tourism.
