Florida’s recent bleaching sees severe decline in elkhorn coral diversity

In the summer of 2023, a heatwave in Florida caused significant coral bleaching, leading to a drastic reduction in elkhorn coral diversity. Researchers found that genetic diversity decreased by 77%, with only 37 out of 160 genotypes remaining in the region. Scuba divers can help by reporting the locations of elkhorn coral colonies to assist in conservation efforts.
