Finding Endeavour: Using archives and archaeology to identify an iconic shipwreck

The search for the HMB Endeavour, now known as Lord Sandwich, has captured the attention of maritime archaeologists for over twenty years. Between 2018 and 2021, a team explored a shipwreck site in Newport Harbour, which may contain the remains of this iconic vessel. Researchers have gathered historical and archaeological evidence to help identify the site, originally scuttled during the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778. They found design features at the site that match those of the Endeavour, providing strong evidence for its identification.
