Two invasive soft corals known as pulse corals are threatening the Caribbean, specifically Unomia stolonifera and Xenia membranacea. These corals reproduce quickly and can cover coral reefs and seagrass, harming marine ecosystems. Although their presence was first noticed off Venezuela, they have recently been reported in Cuba and Puerto Rico, increasing concerns for Florida divers. Local authorities are requesting divers to report any sightings, as these invasions can be hard to control once established. Protecting reefs will require community involvement and stronger regulations on marine life trade.
