Australia joins the Global Ghost Gear Initiative

Australia has joined the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) to tackle the issue of abandoned fishing gear, also known as ghost gear. This type of marine debris is a major contributor to ocean plastic pollution and can harm marine life and divers. Australia committed AU$1.4 million to focus on ghost fishing nets in the Arafura and Timor Seas. Ghost gear is responsible for up to 86% of all macroplastics in the ocean, significantly impacting fish stocks. The initiative will support regional actions to address this serious environmental threat.
