China overtakes US for captive orca numbers – report

China has now surpassed the United States in the number of captive orcas. A report by the China Cetacean Alliance states that there are currently 22 orcas in China, with most in facilities lacking proper care standards. Meanwhile, Chinese theme parks are expanding rapidly, with 101 facilities operating and more under construction. This growth contrasts with Western nations, which are moving away from keeping cetaceans in captivity for entertainment. Concerns have been raised about the welfare of these animals and the associated risks to human safety during swim-with-cetacean experiences.
