GFCM
The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) imposed a ban in 2012 on fishing 24 vulnerable shark and ray species in the Mediterranean. These include valuable species like shortfin makos and endangered guitarfishes. However, there is little evidence that this ban is being enforced, and the Shark Trust is urging the GFCM to ensure compliance and support national bans to protect these species.
