The Florida manatee, a beloved marine mammal, is facing new threats that could endanger its survival. Climate change is causing harmful algal blooms which reduce the availability of seagrass, their primary food source. As a result, manatees in the Indian River Lagoon are now consuming algae, but the long-term health effects of this diet shift are unclear. Despite recent conservation efforts, mortality rates remain high, indicating urgent action is needed to protect these gentle giants and their habitat.
