Pitcairn’s Ducie Atoll and Henderson Island recognised as Important Shark and Ray Areas

Ducie Atoll and Henderson Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands, have been recognized as Important Shark and Ray Areas by the IUCN. This designation highlights their critical role in shark conservation and supports efforts backed by the UK Government’s Blue Belt Programme. Research showed populations of grey and whitetip reef sharks in these areas. Both types of sharks face threats and the recognition will aid in their protection.
