In 2017, important discussions about shark conservation occurred during meetings of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Fishing nations did not adopt necessary limits to protect shortfin mako sharks, causing concern for overfishing and depletion of their populations. Additionally, there were calls for action regarding the illegal landing of endangered Giant Devil Rays in Turkey.
