Restoring coral reefs by planting new coral on degraded reefs can result in rapid recovery, with the restored reefs growing as fast as healthy ones within four years. The Mars Coral Reef Restoration Programme uses “reef stars” to transplant coral fragments onto degraded reefs, showing successful recovery in Indonesia after blast fishing damage. The study led by the UK’s University of Exeter highlights the significance of active management to enhance reef resilience against climate change impacts.
