Coral Restoration Foundation aims to preserve the genetic diversity of Florida’s Coral Reef. Genetic sequencing helps identify different genotypes of corals, which is vital for increasing resilience against environmental changes. By planting corals of various genotypes, they ensure that some will survive even in extreme conditions, like rising temperatures. The “Tree of Life” holds a variety of elkhorn coral genotypes as a backup. Plans for future sequencing and re-population of gene banks are underway to protect this vital genetic variety.
