On February 3, 2024, a scuba diving accident occurred in Cenote Nariz which involved three divers. One diver, a local instructor using a KISS Sidewinder CCR, experienced distress underwater and began losing consciousness. Despite attempts to assist him, he was unable to switch to an open-circuit system and ultimately drowned. The investigation revealed possible hypoxia or hypercapnia as causes of distress, and emphasized the importance of training and safety practices in cave diving.
