Nitrogen narcosis can occur when divers breathe compressed air at high pressure. Although it’s primarily caused by increased nitrogen in the body, other factors can also worsen its effects. Symptoms like euphoria, confusion, and impaired judgment typically start appearing at depths over 30 meters and worsen with greater depth. Factors such as fatigue, cold water, and alcohol can increase susceptibility to narcosis. To manage this risk, divers should limit their depth, use gas mixtures like nitrox or trimix, and communicate with their dive buddy.
