Underwater Navigation Tips for New Scuba Divers

Exploring the world beneath the waves as a scuba diver is an exhilarating experience. However, to make the most of your dives, mastering the skill of underwater navigation is crucial. Whether you’re exploring vibrant coral reefs or diving wrecks, these underwater navigation tips will help you navigate with confidence and ensure a safe and enjoyable dive.

Plan Your Dive

Every great dive starts with a dive plan. “Plan your dive, dive your plan.” Before entering the water, take the time to plan your dive thoroughly. Study the dive site map, review dive plans, and familiarize yourself with key landmarks or reference points. Understanding the layout of the dive site will provide a solid foundation for your underwater navigation.

An important part of planning your dive is discussing the plan with your dive buddy. Make sure you both understand and agree on the dive plan.

Navigate With Your Buddy

Diving with a buddy is not only for safety but also for navigation support. Since you both should know the plan for the dive, communicating about the dive should be easier. Stay in communications contact (stay where your buddy can see your hand signals) and communicate with your buddy throughout the dive. Two sets of eyes and minds working together increase the chances of staying on course and finding your way back.

Navigate With a Compass

It sounds silly to say this but a compass is a critical piece of your dive gear. You should never dive without a compass, period. On my kit, my dive computer has a digital compass built in. Additionally, there is one on my backup computer, and I have a compass clipped to my BCD as a redundant backup.

In your open-water class, you learned how to use your compass to navigate both on the surface and underwater. Just because you’ve taken the class though doesn’t mean you’ve mastered it. Practice with it, and practice with your dive buddy using your compass. This way, when you need the skill, it’s there for you.

Navigate Using Natural Topography

A compass is not the only tool necessary for underwater navigation. A keen sense of observation is a vital tool as well.

Observing the underwater topography and using natural navigation cues can assist your navigation efforts. Pay attention to coral formations, rock formations, and other distinctive features. Developing these observation skills will enhance your ability to navigate underwater.
