Pillar coral is a threatened species in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Caribbean, known for its unique pillar-like growth. These corals spawn after the August full moon, releasing sperm and eggs for fertilization. With few remaining colonies, successful spawning is rare. A recent workshop in St. Thomas allowed researchers to observe and collect gametes, but only two corals spawned, preventing fertilization. Understanding coral spawning is essential for restoration efforts amid challenges like climate change and disease.
