Why it Matters: Coral Bleaching

Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel algae due to environmental stress, turning them transparent. Bleaching doesn’t immediately kill corals but weakens them, impacting marine biodiversity as they provide habitat and food for many species. With rising ocean temperatures, coral reefs face increased mortality, leading to a decline in marine ecosystems and potential ecosystem collapse.
