Scientists from the National Geographic Pristine Seas expedition have discovered the world’s largest coral colony in the Solomon Islands. Called the ‘mega-coral’, it measures 34 meters wide, 32 meters long, and 5.5 meters high. This coral colony, estimated to be around 300 years old, is a species known as Pavona clavus. The find is significant because it shows that large, healthy coral colonies can still thrive despite the alarming decline of coral reefs worldwide. Protecting these ecosystems is essential for marine life and human livelihoods.
