Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned pro, having a reliable dive buddy is like having an underwater sidekick – someone to share the wonders of the deep, help you out in a pinch, and ensure your safety while exploring the aquatic realm. Having a dive buddy means having a lifeline, someone who’s got your back in unexpected situations.

Insta-Buddies

Down here in South Florida, many of the dive boats have “insta-buddy” policies. Whenever possible, nobody dives alone. So if you show up without a buddy, they will pair you up with someone else who doesn’t have a dive buddy. This isn’t always bad. One of my best friends in our scuba community started as an Insta-buddy.

If you are paired up with someone you don’t know, take the time to get to know them. You need to make sure you are comfortable with your new dive buddy. Talk to them, Ask them about their experience level, examine their gear, and familiarize yourself with things like how their weight pockets work and where their spare air is located.

It’s also a good idea to go over hand signals so that the two of you can communicate clearly when you see that massive sea turtle or shark. Good underwater communication is crucial for safety and getting the most out of your dive.
